There is now talk about a button maker. The elections office is examining Roxanne, Seamus, Ted, and Jean's buttons (and also a few others) to see if they were made one the same button maker. I've heard rumours that they all had a button party at someone's house to make all of their buttons together.

The elections office has apparently been meeting with the people involved. The information just keeps flooding in. Read more here.

Julie, Julie, Julie

Julie sent an email out to her volunteers after Tristan failed his billingualism test, telling them that she didn't need as many volunteers anymore because she was running unopposed. She then went on to tell her volunteers whose campaigns to volunteer for instead, and why. Read the email here.

So. Not only did she tell these people who to support, but she wrote some very harsh things about the other candidates:

Regarding Maureen: "apparently studies in economics. Woop-tee-doo. Elle me fait peur parce que ses motivations sont vraiment pas les bonnes, elle aime pas"

Regarding RPG: "un poète philosophe, grand parleur, très petit faiseur. En comparaison avec lui, le slogan de Seamus devrait être “gets shit done”"

Regarding Michèle: "ne voit pas de discrimination ou d’impression nul part, un peu comme moi en 6ème année dans cours d’école. Genre."

Completely uncalled for.

Julie has since sent an email apologizing to those mentioned in the email:

C'est avec sincérité que j'aimerais exprimer mes excuses aux gens affectés par mon courriel privé qui a été publié mercredi en soirée, sur La Rotonde. Ce que j'y ai écris très rapidement était inapprorié et je ne l'ai pas écris avec l'intention de le rendre public. C'était inacceptable d'abaisser ces candidats. Je tiens à m'excuser personnellement à chacun d'entre eux dans les prochains jours.
Je suis responsable de mes actions et je comprends que mes propos négatifs n'étaient absolument pas nécessaires et dégradents. Les gens concernés ont fait et accomplis des projets et des initiatives en tant que leaders étudiants, j'ai plutôt mentionné quelques bêtises à mes bénévoles.

The things that are coming out regarding the so-called "slate" are really breaking my heart. Unbelievable.

And it's out.

This morning, La Rotonde reported that Roxanne emailed Sidney Loko during elections prep. If you take a glance at the message, Rox 1) offers to fix up his poster 2) offers to look over his platform 3) reminds him about putting together his website and banners, and 4) Apologizes for being pushy, but says that she just wants everything to be ready for "their side".

I can hardly wait for the rest of the evidence to come out. Secret slate fail.

But wait...there's more!

Alexandre Chaput, Maureen Hasinoff, and RPG are contesting the elections results and have sent a letter to the SAC.


They intend to prove that Julie, Seamus, Roxanne, and Jean were part of a slate (which is against the SFUO's constitution). As far as I know, there is a handful of people who are coming forward about this 'slate'. I have no actual proof of anything, so I'll leave my thoughts and rumours aside until more info comes out. But I feel like RPG, Alex, and Maureen are just coming forward with what everyone has been thinking since the beginning of the elections...

If they can prove it, there could possibly be a by-election. Whee.


We will keep you updated as to what's going on.

This makes me think you are spying on me. It creeps me out. You will probably lose my vote by doing this.

So, candidates, if I'm going to vote for you, I've probably already looked at your platform. I've probably joined your facebook group. I've probably seen your posters on campus.

Mystery of the Missing PINs

I have solved the mystery of the missing PINS. And by solved, I mean emailed the elections peeps and asked them what was up. Super detective? I think SO!

It turns out that they are sending the emails out in shifts; one assumes this is to prevent the crash of the e-voting universe.

The advice I was given: if you do not have your PIN by noonish, contact the helpdesk through the evote link on the iwillvote.ca website.

I hope that clears things up for some of you!

UPDATE: Wassim posted this in the comments of another post, but I want to make sure it is obvious:

"As you know, we decided to send two disctinct emails: French and English. We sent out the French emails first and we are now about to send the English ones. They were all sent at the same time, but there seems to be a traffic jam. The University, Everyonecounts and the Elections Bureau is on it."

So, the candidates are out and about bright-eyed and bushy-tailed this morning! I have already spotted Seamus and Mel Book, and it s only 8:46am. 

*aside: As often as it happens, I can still never wrap my head around the Presidential Candidate Wolfe's cancer-stick addiction. Someone so socially aware might consider cluing in to this ridiculously prevalent health issue. I am sure this dead horse has been beaten to a pulp, but I cannot help it - he was smoking when I spotted him.

ANYWAY. Have you voted yet? Apparently most of us could have as of 6am, but this blogger has yet to get her PIN. From what s humming along the interweb tubes, I have gathered that I am not alone. We shall see - do not fail us now, hard-won and theoretically convenient e-voting or you will be shelved for years.

I would encourage you to go and vote right now, but I know I am waiting for Thursday, so that would make me a pile of hypocrite - it is in the final hours that true character is revealed, so keep your eyes peeled, discerning populace, and stay tuned!

It's about time this arts-fest comes to a close. Everyone just keeps agreeing with each other. Where is the anger? Where is the controversy?

Martin- solidarity, student voice, etc.

Robert- wants to be critical of the SFUO in a constructive way, thinks everyone here has good ideas- stop being so goddamn friendly you arts kid!

Amy- reiterating what she’s said before- but she has only repeated others’ ideas, so what has she really said? Anti- oppression trainings to represent students fully

Extra! Extra! Seamus Wolfe just walked in the Café. (12:38pm)

Cheevers- talks about general assemblies again, strong and resilient communities of students, less student debt, wants to look after the most disadvantaged (international student rights)

Danika- issues come up during elections from very different point of views, SFUO needs a lot of work in connecting with students, general assemblies will help, task-force on campus racism, thinks there has not been a lot of issues addressed today- hasn’t talked about international students and sustainability- wants to continue the work that she’s already been doing

Mel- wants to address Martin’s comment, does not think you’re either working for the students or the admin, thinks we need a combination relationship and foster a dialogue between the admin and the students, 24hr library time, more quiet study space (props to Café Alt), wants to continue to represent students on the board, tired of personal political agendas being addressed at the board

Scott- alright. Student’s interests are not coming first, he wants to change that. 24 hr library, not losing their scholarships after first year, better admin relationships (sounds like RPG’s platform…..official rep much?), we need to make sure that students don’t go into debt and make sure they have the best places to study, work with administration.

Questions from the audience:

Ted HO: what is the view of the role of board members outside of the board? Outside of committees?

Amy- important that candidates are very active on the campus, being involved, encourage other students to get involved

Robert- any boa member should involve themselves as a part of campus life, emphasizes communication to make the BOA more visible and accessible to students at large- make the email list more prominent

Martin- a no-brainer question, needs to figure out what bugs students on a day-to-day basis, there is not that channel of communication between students of the board

Scott- repeats the accessibility/accountability statement, thinks it would be fantastic if someone recognized him at an event from being on the board-

Mel- thinks it’s important to go to arts-areas (like café alt) and talk to students, needs to go grass-roots to make it a better board

Danika- ummmmmmmmmmmm…..what was the question again? Talks about student consultations again, agrees with everyone elses statements, talks about clubs (stop being student affairs, you’re in arts now!)

Cheevers- obviously agrees, talks about his platform, his concerns for students need to be echoed in how he acts outside the board, doesn’t want to be insincere- needs to keep consistency

How do you see your relationship with the member associations and the federated bodies? (SAFA, Communications, Arts bitches!)

Robert- absolutely! Recognizes the importance of the federated bodies, didn’t realize that this already happened, thinks it should happen with all the faculties

Martin- thinks it’s necessary to have a working relationship with the federated bodies, sent an email out to member associations asking to meet with them to find out their concerns

Scott- thinks its positive to have a working relationship with student body organizations, thinks its fantastic that 1 board member goes to SAFA board meetings, thinks all BOA reps should go

Mel- extremely important to ensure BOA members are attending BOD meetings, informs student leaders of other goings on of other student leaders- web of communication, a good way to get students excited and involved, wants to continue to sit at both BOA and BOD

Danika- talks about the structure of the federation, loves the structure, wants to keep it this way, wants to participate in arts board meetings

Cheevers- agrees, god is this arts or something? Everyone is agreeing all the time- says its good to ensure the communication, yet has NEVER come to an ARTS BOD meeting (As both arts senator and BOA rep!)

Amy- agrees. Are we surprised? Doesn’t think this should be a replacement for talking with other students at large

Which committees do you see yourself getting involved in?

Martin- interested in campaigns, wants to work on better communication with the federated bodies (the exec is supposed to hold Round Tables to solve this problem….)

Scott- a self-processed policy nerd wants to be on the Policy and Bylaw committee- and also interested in the elections committee

Mel- was on promotions committee this year, but hopes were squashed. The chair always left it to the last minute so it didn’t really happen, wants to rectify this in the coming year

Danika- thinks we should all attend the campaigns committee as it’s open- doesn’t know what other committees, she wants to start some more committees (food services, diversity of the board)

Cheevers- talks about his fun role on the Policy and Bylaw committee, cant remember the name of another committee that he’s on but hasn’t covened- wants to look at constituency groups for the board

Amy- also doesn’t have a list of committees to draw from- does this mean that you just don’t know what committees are out there? Says she wants to be on Danika’s diversity committee (it’s not even formed yet)

Robert- interested in human rights, accessibility, doesn’t seem to realize that the campaigns committee is open

Recent BOA Meetings have had a focus on issues related to SFUO policy. Do you feel that there should be a more diverse focus taken at the BOA?

Scott- feels that the board is there to debate, we shouldn’t be discussin aboriginal landrights at the board and should leave it for student issues

Mel- diversification in terms of the policies being brought forth and being discussed, the board need to related directly to student issues, need a more functioning board
Danika- interesting, someone who’s been on the board 2 years, disagreements will exists as long as people have differing ideas, board’s role is to take the decisions, thinks sub-committees are the most effective

Cheevers- agrees with Danika, nothing else you can debate at the board aside from policy, motion has to be an amendment, policy change, etc. doesn’t know what else you could change

Amy- echoes Danika and Cheevers’ statements, also sees the board as a place wehre the environemtn should be created to be the most anti-oppressive

Robert- states that everyone agrees, boooooring, asks the question whether the debate is going to be reasonable, needs to be a conduit for students voices

Martin- first year student!!!! Who knew? The boa is not new (like he thinks), the structure is new. Geez. Wants to work to have a functioning boa.

Why does the BOA exist and who does it work for?

Mel- highest governing body within the SFUO, students issues are brought forth, where money is spent, gives a mandate to the executive, there to make decisions on behalf of students- thinks this focus has been lost in the past year

Danika- yeah….direct question…mumble mumble, thinks that the boa has been going in a good direction (YAH, it’s YOUR executive). “the campaigns committee has been a great success, we’ve had 1 meeting…”

Cheevers- students is the only answer. The board works for the students, doesn’t know what else to say

Amy- repeats everyone else’s answer

Robert- created to insert a plurality to the decision making at the SFUO, trying to find new ways to represent students, widen the decision making process

Martin- there’s not really a lot that I can contribute, struggle towards it being as democratic as possible

Scott- “has the plague”… we work for students, actions of the board need to better students lives, we work for students, accountable for students and make sure to hold other student leaders accountable

With the recent disputes between the Senate and certain students, how do you propose to regain the the respect of the Administration?

Danika- the executive is doing a good job- they’ve supported the video-taping policy- “they have an alright relationship with the administration”

Cheevers- talking about relations with the Senate- he is the rogue student senator- talking with GSAED and the SFUO to help the relationship between the Senate and the SFUO

Amy- it has to be said that Francophile students do have a role to play in gaining student power back, thinks that what has happened at recent senate meetings is a good example of how to take student power back, thinks we should encourage students to do more actions like storming the senate

Robert- wants the university to be assisting us, not arbitrating us, realize that we should be moderate, but clever- there is a power difference and we have to realize it to lobby and create a better relationship with the admin.

Martin- between the senate and the SFUO is not something the board can deal with, he’s not going to “cuddle up” with the admin. Talks about history of the 1990’s, stand up for our members and not to act as a mediator to an admin that does not care

Scott- NO, if you fight the admin they’re going to fight back- we need to work with the admin in constructive ways- “not getting in bed with the admin with vested interests”- ???- respect is a two-way street- gives props to Allan Rock whilst other candidates roll their eyes

Mel- echoes Scott’s sentiments, need to establish an open dialogue with the admin, you get what you put in, be open and responsible, respectful, admin has given us a hand out this year and student leaders have slapped that hand

Since the BOA reform we now have representation by population, however the SFUO exec still holds 6 seats (1/5 of the power), should this be changed?

Cheevers- no, it’s good to have a large number of people who are elected from the students at large

Amy- agrees again. Geez girl get your own ideas.

Robert- no, doesn’t think its’ unfair to have the entire executive on the board

Martin- not sure of the question, needs more clarification- thinks it’s something to look into if issues arise from over representation of the exec- have you been to a board meeting?> they vote in a slate every time!!! 1/5 of the power

Scott- the boa exists to hold the exec accountable “sweet jesus”- as he coughs, thinks its’ a two way street, work with them and maintain that connection- thinks they should all be voting members, but will support a student motion (if it came up) to reduce their voting power

Mel- agrees, reiterates that the exec is elected by 30,000 students (well not really as voter turnout is LOW), doesn’t really have a problem with them being there

Danika- mumbling en francais, mumble mumble mumble

11:27am- Opening statements over and all the candidates rush off to do a class presentation.

Pizza has been ordered. Mmmmmm.

While the candidates are class-presenting there are many confused café patrons hoping to sit in the empty seats reserved for the info session. Everyone seems to be in a daze. Again, it’s probably because of the season- midterm season that is…

Amy Hammett- arrives back first, then asks the moderator if she has time to go for a smoke- I guess she won’t be voting for a smoke-free campus.

Mel Book and Scott Bedard arrive back next and promptly take their seats. They inform the audience that they did not do a giant all encompassing class presentation.

Danika is the next back (11:38), she was happy that there were no other candidates there- afraid of competition are we???

Mel Book is muttering something about “buns of steel” when referring to all of the stairs in Simard.

Cheevers is the only one not back yet…(11:41am)- how long does it take to do a class presentation?

He finally returns (making excuses) at 11:44am. Man, I hope the pizza gets here soon.

The good news is that there is somewhat of an audience now, although it appears to be primarily the arts executive.

ARTS BOA/Senate Information Session

~ GUEST BLOGGER TODAY!! None of us could make it to the Arts BOA Candidate Debate and Info Session/Meet and Greet, so we sent in a capable emissary. Let's call her 'pseudomadonna'. Don't worry. She's proxy-licious. Be back soon! <3 cartoonmadonna ~

There are a total of 3 people watching the beginning of the info session.

The candidates look a little disappointed that no one is here to see them.

The rest of Café Alt is filled with avid studiers, perhaps no one is interested because elections take place during midterm season?!

11:16am- the candidates are discussing breaking at 11:30 to do a classroom presentation- they decide that they all want to go to a call together and present themselves as THE ARTS CANDIDATES

There are 8 candidates on the elections website, but only 7 showed up for the info session.

Alright, Opening Statements:

Scott Bedard- BOA candidate- “students interest must come foremost”, going to be a moderately responsible voice (spoken like a true liberal).

Mel Book- BOA candidate (reelection)- boa has great power to ensure that student’s interests are met- wants to make a board dedicated to the betterment of everyday student issues, there are 3 major things she wants to work on- making agendas more readily available prior to meetings, improve quiet study space (24hr library time), keep on bringing motions to the board after consultations with students


Danika Brisson- BOA candidate- outgoing-vp student affairs for sfuo- wants to apply her experience (although has only ever voted in the exec-slate on the board to date), interested in environmental issues, food services, representation, talking about the anti-racism taskforce, anti-oppression training, sustainable development, she is talking like she is vp student affairs, not a regular arts student running for board rep.

Michael Cheevers- BOA candidate (reelection)- gives a bit of a history about the BOA whilst wearing his version of the Seamus-solidarity suit, wants to introduce general assemblies once per semester for the SFUO students (sounds like Francois’ platform from last year), international students need to be a priority at the SFUO in terms of campaigns (says the campaigns coordinator)

Amy Hammett- BOA- anti-oppression, mandatory training for future boa members (doesn’t that already happen?>), student power, nominations rights, direct campaigns to overrule administrative power, focus on split fees and late fees, wants to improve the environment of the campus

Robert Prazares- BOA- several concerns, storkes his beard, concern between the student body and the SFUO, does a shout out to Cheevers, talking about his own voice/average voice…blah blah blah, people tend to get carried away and take their jobs too seriously. Moves his hand in the OBama style. Wants to find out what other people think and brings up communication between students and SFUO, thinks CFS campaign was good

Martin Schoots-McAlpine- BOA- lack of actually going to students and finding out what they want, cafeteria food, lack of electrical outlets, 24hr library, overpriced rez rent, talking about student union who is not afraid to stand up to the administration

And thus begins the last push on the campaigns, and on this fine Monday I am being treated to my first candidate presentation of this year's elections. I realize that the candidates were given a list of classes, but it does seem odd that even if this class isn't listed, a proactive candidate would be in UCU AUD for all classes, as they are guaranteed large, though maybe not necessarily 200+.

Maureen showed up for a quick presentation, and the reception was overall unenthused. Was it the fact that it was an 8:30 class on a Monday morning? Are first-year students fully disinterested in the elections? Are they over-presented to?

Probably.

This is voter apathy before the numbers come in. I hope that the enticement of online voting will help, but if this sample is any indication of the greater demographic of the school, maybe even catering to the laziest of sit-in-front-of-the-computer-for-hours-on-end students is not the solution.

Breaking news from the Fulcrum's AGM

Maureen Hasinoff just got elected to the Fulcrum's board as a student director.

A good first step!

OMG! FIRST CLASS PRESENTATION!

In my four years at this university, I have never had the chance to see a classroom presentation during the elections period.

SO! Mad props to Seamus Wolfe and Ted Horton for presenting in my class this afternoon.

cartoonmadonna and i sauntered in late (because really, who's ON TIME for class nowadays?), and Seamus was mid-yell. I believe he recognized us and got flustered. So we waved...and he waved back. It took him a second to get going again - I know, us bloggers can be intimidating. Surprisingly, he has traded the blue-button-down-and-khaki-pants outfit he's been wearing for the past three weeks for his Solidarity Suit, a Drop Fees shirt and a knit hat. He is also wearing an abundance of buttons.

Makes a plug about some SFUO site. He wants slam poetry on campus. My favourite, favourite part of the presentation was when he yelled about the transit strike, and the fact that the SFUO got shuttle buses on the road within two days. An excellent initiative, but students are obviously still annoyed about the strike. He PAUSED for applause.

There was none.

After Seamus finished, Ted HO! went (this is my new nickname for him. I hope he likes it). Ted rattles off a long list of his volunteer experience on campus - is there anything he hasn't done?! He makes a joke about writing for Oral Otis, but I don't think most students got the joke (unfortunate!). I actually really like what he has to say, I just wish he were saying it louder! We can barely hear him! Ted HO wants to focus on things that impact OUR students on a daily basis. He also mentions something about making sure our houses are being taken care of, and protecting us from evil landlords.

Holy Crap! A werewolf(e) in Horror Fiction!

So... little did this humble blogger know, but she was in for a treat today in her English Lit elective! Seamus Wolfe showed up to present his case for being elected President of the SFUO! He literally talked to himself: had mini- dramatized conversations meant to relate to us, but which mostly made up doubt his 'soundness of mind' - oh! I went there! (JUST KIDDING!). 

He yelled a bunch (par for the course), but seemed pretty relaxed.

ps GREAT question from the audience: 'Do you have the pin with the uterus on it?' Seamus almost falls over laughing - 'No, the WRC does.'

VP University Affairs:

Jeremy Stuart - We are off to a great start: Jeremy Stuart has a few interesting personalities in his repertoire! 1) He seems to be a pretty sweet video editor out of san francisco, who might have peaked in the 90s, but has Arrested Development on his resume (I don t care if it is the hip hop group and not the show - I believe what I choose to believe) ... 2) He is also an actor! On imdb and everything! His entire career spans the year 1988. A solid vintage. Anyone seen 'Billy's Christmas Angels'? 3) Last, but by NO means least, he is a college wrestler from Santa Monica.

Cameron Montgomery - Or should I say Dr. Cameron Montgomery? -> A professor here at the University of Ottawa in the Faculty of Education!! Also ... a MAN! Who knew?!? (Secret identity: Lhasa Apso?)

She was involved in Western Canada Youth Parliament ... mayhaps inexperience is not a factor to be counted against this young candidate.

Roxanne Dubois - weird. I expected it to be all our own Roxanne all the time for THIS google search, but THIS mysterious letter was the second hit! 'vascular reconstructions!' 'sealing areas of leakage!' ... Is Roxanne secretly the Director of Regulatory Affairs at Cohesion Technologies Inc? I truly hope so. 

ps 'all required documents should be submitted in triplicate'? ... I m not sure that kind of attention to detail is what Roxanne is known for...

VP Social:

Alexandre Chaput - nothing too thrilling: the French version of his own elections blog is the 5th hit, followed directly by his English version. His next real hit is a mention of him in the BOA minutes - *yawn* Come ON, Chaput! Stir up some controversy! I can t wait to get to RPG...

Makes this blogger think that Julie is fantastic at passive communication - she will hide communication treasures all over the place for you to find! Too bad most people can t be bothered to go looking. Be MORE AGGRESSIVE, Julie! Or Tristan is going to wear your (metaphorical) skin to his (metaphorical) birthday party.

Michele Lamarche - how international!! Michele pops up in a sexy 'who's who' listing in France! There are also several biographical links - people like to write about your life, Michele! Apparently bankers are newsworthy... (Michele is also a San Franciscan acupunturist - I wonder if she helps Jeremy relax and escape his hectic video editing career...?)

Marc Kelly - What a great hit! Marc Kelly: Lightstalker. apparently this guy is a photographer, but I prefer to make up my own meaning for Lightstalker. He is also a student at the University of Manchester (Particle Physics?) ... I wonder if he s allowed on THAT campus when he doesn t have class... Possible best: Marc Kelly, former Notre Dame basketball star, now Californian superior court judge. IMAGINE Marc Kelly deciding your sentence!!! 'What do YOU want to do to make up for your crime?'

RPG (aka Renaud-Philippe Garner) - wow! RPG helped me find an SFUO blog I had never heard of! ANYhow, back to the business at hand (get it? cuz I m typing... heh.) Apparently, this is old news, but it is a key hit, so I did not want to leave it out. But, really? RPG said something controversial... surprise!!! (ps it was 4 years ago, so I m not sure we can REALLY hold it against him... what is the statute of limitations on being aggressive about political correctness?) Otherwise, it is the predictable La Rotonde, Fulcrum and SFUO blog hits. Not as exciting as I expected.

Tyler Steeves - Way to show up on Serge's Twitter, but that s not very fun to report on... And the only other interesting hit is for a 'waterfront director' at Camp Trillium! Talk about NOT being controversial, Tyler. yeesh. I can t hate on ANY of that...

Seamus Wolfe - Jeepers. I am pretty sure that Seamus rigged this Google search... The first hit is his vp Uni Affairs blog, and then his profile on 4Real.com (a website dedicated to social and cultural change). Then the CFS blog (that I JUST discovered today... see above!) and his Campaign video. 

ps when I googled Seamus (that s what she said) there was also a terrifying link to something called MassWrestling.com. Follow at your own risk. And please explain it in a comment if you have ANY idea what it is or what is going on.

On the VP Communications battle

It wouldn't be an SFUO election without some sort of scandal!

As mentioned yesterday, Tristan Dénomée called Julie out on not accomplishing most of the points in her platform from last year. After listing everything she has failed to do, he asked why anyone should vote for her. Julie tried to maintain her composure, which is difficult when such a thing happens a) in front of the student body and 2) on CAMERA (sup, Zoom?)

Hours later, a new blog was created. Tristan is now heading a No campaign against Julie.

Does it suck for Julie? Yes. Is it a good thing for students? Definitely. They are being reminded that they have a choice.

But...this might be good for Julie. Her campaign has been flying pretty below the radar so far (one reason I've been on the fence about voting Yes for her. You're running for VP Communications...shouldn't this campaign should be the. most. visible. campaign?). In Kyle's blog, she talked about earning her "Yes" votes. Maybe now she'll actually do it- Julie needs to prove to students that she can actually represent them, and COMMUNICATE information to them, whether it be info about events, her own campaign, or the SFUO.

My suggestion: get out and talk to students. find out how THEY want to get their information. The reason why students get annoyed during elections is that they get spoken to, not spoken with. Here's an idea - start your classroom presentations by asking students what they want. Try and work towards that TWO WAY COMMUNICATION you wanted last year, Julie.

I'm interested to see what Tristan's next step will be. Julie, get your action plan together.

VP Communication

Julie is wearing orange. Spiffy.

She is getting caught up with technology talk. You need to focus on the basics. Make sure materials are fully bilingual (proofread, corrected, edited and re-edited). Get students interested. The reason the "SFUO Bubble" that I keep hearing about exists is because of back-seat promotions on the web and facebook. Sure, the interwebs provide useful ways to reinforce your message, but you need to get your message out to NEW students who may not be friends with SFUO execs and people on the Federated Bodies first. Not all students are interested in student politics, and they shouldn't need to be connected to them to hear about or feel comfortable going to events.

TV Screens won't get people out to events. Facebook groups won't get people out to events. What will Julie do that's different and innovative?

DRAMA.

People are not happy with Julie, and she is trying hard to maintain her composure. Angry eyes. Tristan bombards her with her failures from last year, ended with "By taking all of these things into account, why should anyone vote for you?". Sarah Burke brings up the infamous "botched translation" from the Winter Games. She blames the printing people. Why didn't anyone check the flyers before they were given out?

Julie ends with another point about technology. IT WILL FIX EVERYTHING.

Chaput: speaker to 101 Week, was great, but event was poorly attended. Wants to have less going on for 101 Week so that all events are better attended. Priorities for events for better focus. Accessibility for underage students, not just movie nights (flamenco note: maybe more faculties need to hold 101 week like Arts--all events all ages)

Social Debate - Witty Commentary

Overall impression, Alex keeps dwelling on things he's done (a lot of good things) instead of what he will do. Jean doesn't really seem to know what he's talking about and keeps throwing in buzzwords that don't really mean anything.

I like the idea of increasing participation by organizing less events and focusing on promoting them and making them bigger.

Alex talks about working WITH volunteers to build ties and relationships across campus.

MOST BORING SOCIAL DEBATE EVAR. You want to be VP Social. The life of the party.

One thing I'm noticing across all of these debates is that all of the candidates seem bored. Campaigning rule #1 - It doesn't matter how boring what you're talking about is, you need to make it seem like it's super interesting. Be smiley. People don't want to vote for a debbie-downer.

Use more interactive means to promote services. Do class presentations. Move away from just using posters to promote.

Wants to find more ressources for the services. Her experience working with Member Associations for SAFA can be applied.

No! But it's a shame, they are great. Didn't know a lot of them existed until halfway through her first year. But they are important - students need to be informed about what exactly the services do!

Never directly worked with the services, but has friends working with them. Has good experience and resources that she can bring to the services.

You said you wanted to more English representation...do you value the francophone community??

Question is out of context! It has nothing to do with the admin having an 'accent'. Comes from the English department, a lot of comments from students about the difficulties anglophone students have working with staff at the faculty level.

SFUO is perceived to be mainly ANGLOPHONE. What will you do to make sure Franchophones feel comfortable using the services?

Billingualism centre is a step in the right direction. Would like to see an equality in the languages, not one language above the other.

You had a visible role in the CFS referendum. What will your role be with the CFS?

Continue to work possitively to address problems students have with the CFS. They do have a lot of knowledge and ressources. Is open to working with them, and won't fight them. I won't dwell on this!

How do you plan to keep the integrity and individuality of the services?

Interview process when hiring, making sure applicants know what they are applying for.

Clubs. How are you going to distribute resources and finances? (For example, offices)

Rewarding clubs that work hardest on campus with more resources, however everyone has access to the clubs and resources. Explore structures at other communities to see how we can improve.

Dear gentle readers,

The lure of free crepes, pizza, and the possibility of an iPod touch have convinced me to come out bright and early and liveblog the debates for the SFUO's elections! Should be interesting.

1848 is quite full. It's nice to see so many students out and getting interested in these elections. A nod to Wassim, Sylvia, and the Elections committee for generating interest! Go team!

10:25 - Opening statements. Roxanne goes first. Cool and calm. She talks about Café Alt as a new business on campus, and the fact that there is still a lot of work to be done. She wants to organize bartending workshops for students (uhm, awesome!) and

Maureen - Reinvesting by creating scholarships. Has 20, 000$ in debt, so she understands! It's student money first, they need to know where they are going,

Rox - We need to be careful...we budgeted for 100,000$ surplus but this is used for other activities and events. Talks about the economic crisis.

Rox - 1848 is breaking even this year (applause from the audience!!) Programming needs to be inclusive. She keeps talking about a Salsa night. I'm not sure how much of a draw this would be...Sure, a kitchen would be nice, but it would be costly and there's no space for it.

Maureen - Space outside was originally to be used for a kitchen...it's office space right now. Student associations should be using

Does the Fed pay it's employees well enough??? (lawlz)

Maureen - We need to up their salaries. We need to look at all of our possibilities with HR, and how it will effect the budget.

Maureen - Doesn't don't think it matters. Has experience. She can bring a Fresh Perspective to the SFUO.

Wassim - if you were a fruit, what would you be?

(Let it be NOTED: No names were used by the BOA - this blogger has substituted her best guess for the term ‘Student’ ... but she could be wrong! I do not guarantee my guess!)

 

A ‘Student’ (hereafter referred to as Marc Kelly) was arrested and now there are restrictions on his access to campus. The U of O admin can recommend that the Crown change the restrictions so that he can campaign, and Dean is concerned that it sets a dangerous precedent that he cannot participate, especially since there is ‘no proven guilt on the charge.’

 

Question for the board: Should Dean write to the university to ask that they request that the Crown relaxes Kelly’s restrictions?

 

- Lisa: wants to go in camera - she is uncomfortable discussing the Student/Kelly when we all know who we re talking about (OR DO WE?!?)

- Faris: pretty sure Kelly wouldn t want us to go in camera

- Dean: Kelly is cool with everyone knowing we re talking about this (yet, we are still using the term ‘Student’...)

- Cam: is the individual definitely a student at the U of O?

     - Dean’s response: yes, and a member of the SFUO

- Sam: would the letter be from the BOA or SFUO?

     - Dean: would come from Dean/SFUO President on behalf of BOA

- Faris: is a letter even useful?

- Mel: when did he do his bilingualism test? if he can t be on campus when he s not in class.... illegal?  .......................... *crickets* ............... *cough.

Federico overreacts to Rob again...

 

- Rob resumed: actions have consequences - should respect decision

(Weird Rage Update: Cheevers is losing his shit - he does not agree with Rob and has decided to write that fact all over his face! Really! He’s going crazy over there, not being allowed to talk!!!)

- Fancie: “Listen! (yep, he really did address the board this way AGAIN, with absolutely no rebuff or comment... : |) This ‘dude’ has been treated badly, and we need to support our members - he is innocent until proven guilty.” summary: SHAME! SHAME! LOLIDARITY! (*ahem - oops! Solidarity!)

- Amy: There is a reason that the terms are negotiable. We should defend our membership, and allow him the chance to run fairly.

- Faris: thinks that the university should not interfere with our elections because they don t like the person running; thinks the university is overreaching ... (sounds a little conspiracy-theory to me, but whatever you say Faris... and stop looking at the gallery like that! you re creeping us OUT!). They are not talking about this particular individual anymore, but that the university has no right to ‘interfere’ - it is the BOA’s right to decide (I barely know what he is talking about at this point... *Shrug)

For some completely unintelligible reason, Federico decides that it would be a good idea to vote by roll call (FTW?!?). Why not do EVERYthing in your power to extend this meeting?!? Oh, right, because CAMPAIGNS START TODAY!

 

GACK! The vote is 13 for, 2 against, with FOURTEEN abstentions!!! So, the Motion goes back on the table until it is decided... waaaaah!

Committees

Dean is making noises about presidents, finances and committees... no idea what he is talking about. Wants to put VP Finance on the Promo committee. Also wants to let exec members from Fed Bodies onto BOA committees, since there is a new structure.

- Lisa: motion is not bilingue. she can prove it: she has a freaking dictionary! Rob seconds her critical eye with a resounding ‘SWISH.’ Win for Lisa

- Rob: down with adding Fed Bodies to BOA Committees - They feel a disconnect with the Fed. According to PRT.

- Kyle: doesn t see it working communication-wise

- Rob: It is not about communicating - it is about input and connectivity (not sure he actually SAID ‘connectivity’). By allowing the exec members to sit on these committees will more accurately include the collective experience and voice of the Federated Bodies

- Dean is for the motion (it is HIS motion, but he s just saying...) - he references his PRTs, and mentions that these people are good resources since they are elected by the students as chosen representatives.

- Joel is for motion

- Kyle: repeats that he doesn t understand what the point of including them is - same argument as before: ‘it s too hard to coordinate! waaah!’

- Ted: Agrees that the Federated Bodies’ interests must be taken into account

- Ryan: It is always good to have a new perspective, and it can t hurt to have more input - esp because execs have a ‘finger on the pulse’ of student experience/interests

- Faris calls the question just to be cool (ie without any placards up) again!

 

Motion carries - Fed bodies will be allowed on committees.

Campaigns Committee (Second Reading)

Rob: does not want to pass the motion; he says it will create a slippery slope to start recognizing individual groups - allowing for infinite groups with various afflictions, etc, which might set a precedent that is unsustainable.

 

FEDERICO with the big interruption - takes 2 minutes to tell Rob to keep to the motion - a nice, solid waste of time during a meeting that people keep trying to preemptively adjourn...

 

soooo, ANYWAY,

 

Rob: we need to draw a more specific line, and he is not sure where this motion came from (that makes 4 of us)... He does not think it would be a strong move on the board’s part

 

(gets deathstare from Danika - anonymous text observation: ‘she might cut a bitch, if she was into saying the word ‘bitch’’)

 

Cheevers = LOSES CONTROL - lunges across table and stabs Rob! ok, maybe not quite, but I am 90% sure he was considering it... In any case, he freaks out and makes the same mistake of moving away from the motion, but does NOT get a speech from Federico. Perhaps they are in ...(*gasp!*)...CAHOOTS!

Antonio asks about debateability of second reading and is bitch-slapped with the book of Robert’s Rules by Federico! (I got a little bored and started making stuff up, OK?!?)

 

Holy Crap! FARIS moves to ADJOURN the meeting (shocking!) - can he motivate? Claims that other board members have let him know that they are going to bail to go poster, so it s going to end ANYway.

 

Federico is CHATTY - just let them VOTE.

 

CHALLENGE from Dean! He thinks it is irregular and detrimental to allow Faris to motivate

 

Michael tries to call the question, but cannot because he is only the second to speak...  fine, then! He passes the calling-ball to the next person, go!

Ted wants to set an end time, but is determined to be out of order. Federico is not recognizing him and defeats his non-motion. Bow before me, minions!
