Seamus is having a fun time. Chat him up after the debates. He might buy you a beer... He mentions he has theemes! Transparency, community, some other thing! Realizes he only has 30 seconds left....starts rushing.
Steeves says he'll do an amazing job. He will make sure we all become BFFs.
RPG: I have solid things i want to do! (that's what she said). Says something about little pandas.
Kelly: I dont like politicians (uhm, you're running in an ELECTION). Talks about how if you "speak out" at this university, you suffer the consequences. (ok, so are you running becuase you want to represent us, or so you can talk about Rancourt and your "struggle against the machine"?)

Transit strike!
Did the SFUO make the right decision?
Some guy sits with a sign saying he doesn't want Seamus or a bus driver as his president. Go you...
Steeves: My support is with the students, and the strike hurt the students.
Seamus: Likes questions with about zombies better. It's a tricky situation...He wants to have the debate, and make students make the decision.
Kelly: CONFLICT BETWEEN EMPLOYER AND EMPLOYEES. relates it to Allan Rock! relates it to a natural disaster! what is he talking about?!!?!? Also, mentions that the university encrypts staff emails, but doesn't bother to do it for students. O HAI! Did you find that out while you were hacking into their system and stealing all of our emails to spam?!?!?!?!
RPG: students come first. defend the students.

ZOMBIES AT THE DEBATES
Seamus is talking about Fido. It was filmed in his hometown, he can guard us against zombies if he is president!!
Marc Kelly. WE ARE THE ZOMBIES!!! THE MACHINE! ADMIN!!!
RPG claims that zombies don't exist. Uhm, obviously they do
Steeves comments about the lack of inclusivity. Other monsters feel left out. FTW!!!!

Joël asks a question.
If you are elected, what project are you most excited to work on?
Steeves: It isn't right to give my opinion....as president, whatever the choice is, it's my duty to do the best job i can do with YOUR decision.
Seamus: I don't really want to say which is my fave, so I'll just talk about one that I like....ACRES (high five, Seamus).
Kelly: I don't have any idea....but I want an open environment where students can come and talk about their idea (Translation: Kelly doesn't know what any of the referendum questions are)
RPG: Likes the tobacco free campus idea, but doesn't want to discriminate. Food Bank is a good initiative- Hunger doesn't discriminate (Hey, CFS, do you want to put that on a button?

QUESTION PERIOD
There are so many people waiting!
1) Student must be of "sound mind". CSD: What will you do to take this out of the constitution?
Kelly: Dangerous! Permits a "psychological stigma", and lets you say that their ideas are coming from mental instabilities (apparently he was subjected to this...)
RPG: BOA can change it by next semester! (This isn't true: Seamus can barely contain himself)
Seamus: erm, you'll need to learn about procedure if you want to be president. Agrees that we need to get rid of it. (Puts in a plug about some demonstration he went to. Also mentionned the CSA and BRAG'D! SWEET.
This is a LEGAL term

Prez CONTINUED
Seamus says that the Admin treats us like clients....they are not hairdressers. (ok, Seamus. You and your blue button down are kind of hilarious)
Kelly: BOG voted to increase tuition fees b/c there are only 2 students! It's UNJUST.
RPG: We had the chance to build new relations. We could have rebuilt things, and instead we threw it away. They didn't want insults, but that's what we gave them. We need to start again next year and re-establish relationships with the administration.
Steeves: LACK OF COMMUNICATION! Not enough people know about what the SFUO does. Claims that there aren't enough posters, but I just think they aren't doing IT RITE.
Also, dear readers, you are leaving fabulous comments. Good Job.

Where do you see the SFUO in 5 years?
Steeves: People with PASSION running events, and coming out to events. Student run initiatives. SFUO that is integrated with the community, truly acting as a FEDERATION
Seamus: Hopes he's not here in 5 years. (!!) Says that he doesn't want to be here in 5 years because it's all WHITE MEN running for president. (er.......ok?
Marc Kelly: WE SHOULD CONTROL THE UNIVERSITY! EXTREME POWER! (shove it in your face hole!)
RPG: Build relationships with the admin. We need R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Higher voter turnout.

Moderated Questions
One thing to accomplish:
Kelly: Admin should not be making decisions for the university. (What????)
RPG : Doesn't want a revolution, he just wants a 24-hour library!!
Steeves: Let's make connections so you can get jobs!
Seamus: Make a jab at Steeves about not including mature students in his dialogue (joking with the audience....distracting from the issues at hand)
ps. we're over 400 individual page views! Thanks guys!

Keeps getting applause from his posse
Has 20 second left, but he is wasting it on "uhms"

Tyler Steeves!
Oh, Tyler Steeves exists!
He is super dedicated. Wants a communication community! "We are on the right track, but we need to continue on it. It may be Canada's university, but it's YOUR campus" (ooooo....good line)
Want real stuff! Connect people!
Talking about having a calendar. Wants 101 Week to continue after 101 Week.
He is doing a good job of connecting his opening statements to his videos. Taglines galore!
Remember: A vote for Tyler Steeves is for expertise. Sure.

DRINKING GAME:
-solidarity
- accessibility
- transparency
- CFS
- unity
- administration
- oppression
- change
- rights
- discriminiation
Drink every time one of these is said!
Warning to the candidates....to be respectful. This is going to be interesting.
Opening statements.
Marc - There are classes on campus. Like social classes or actual classes? 15 seconds in, he is talking about the discrimination against him. "We do not have democratic control over our education or our institution".

VP University Affairs
Ted Horton knows student issues. He has experienced them. "Today, we will hear from 4 candidates!" LIES. There are THREE.
Note: Where is the gender parity?!
Sidney: Learning from diversity. Find problems, questions, solve the issue (I like this).
Cameron: Working on relations with the administration. Our method of communicating with the admin is NOT working. (So, so true).
I got distracted by kittens. I apologize for the bad coverage of this debate so far.
Do we have enough representation on the BOG?
Sidney - The SFUO is supposed to represent ALL students. We need to talk to them to figure out what they need.
Cameron -
Ted - NO! We only have one seat on there. We need to figure out WHY we want to seat on each body. Fulfill each man. date.
Cameron - There is a lack of respect on both sides.
Sidney - Follows up on this point. There is a way to ask for things. There have been abuses of procedure, and we need to fix this.
....all of the candidates seem to be saying the same thing.
Ted - People have a lack of information, and don't understand their rights as students.
1848 is getting quite full. Debate WIN!
....are we at capacity?

COMM DRAMA.
Julie just came up to Tristan and spoke to him. Tristan didn't seem interested.
sad kitten.

sad kitten.

VP Communication
Julie is wearing orange. Spiffy.
She is getting caught up with technology talk. You need to focus on the basics. Make sure materials are fully bilingual (proofread, corrected, edited and re-edited). Get students interested. The reason the "SFUO Bubble" that I keep hearing about exists is because of back-seat promotions on the web and facebook. Sure, the interwebs provide useful ways to reinforce your message, but you need to get your message out to NEW students who may not be friends with SFUO execs and people on the Federated Bodies first. Not all students are interested in student politics, and they shouldn't need to be connected to them to hear about or feel comfortable going to events.
TV Screens won't get people out to events. Facebook groups won't get people out to events. What will Julie do that's different and innovative?
DRAMA.
People are not happy with Julie, and she is trying hard to maintain her composure. Angry eyes. Tristan bombards her with her failures from last year, ended with "By taking all of these things into account, why should anyone vote for you?". Sarah Burke brings up the infamous "botched translation" from the Winter Games. She blames the printing people. Why didn't anyone check the flyers before they were given out?
Julie ends with another point about technology. IT WILL FIX EVERYTHING.

Julie Séguin (candidate) vs. Julie Séguin (VP Comm)
Changer l'infrastructure (building highways)
Plus de technolgie, moins de papier (moins de posters?)
Campagnes plus diverses.
Accesibilité.
Bulletin et site-web plus à jour.
Campaigns committee- provide resources to clubs and student associations, more.
Student engagement:
A lot of improvements in student engagement. More consults and surveys, we've already had some (unless it's about CFS. Then the survey is invalid)
Volunteering: good "get involved campaign", MORE POSTERS!
Ressources promotionnelles:
Posters (apparently posted less per event.... maybe this is just ignorance talking, but I've found postering harder this year)
Inflitration of websites (like haxx0rz?)
Is TV screen project going to be a priority next year?
Absolutely.
flamenco note: this is A LOT like Julie's BOA update. It's a shame, really.
Audience questions:
Tradction simultanée, est-ce que c'est possible?
Prix serait extrèmement cher.
Last year, promised about 2-way commucation, when is that going to start?
(Audience, "oohs". "I don't want oohs, I just want to know")
We've opened a lot of committess to students. (But not really for any direct student life issues).
Can we fully decrease posters on campus?
Maybe in the future... something about everyone has internet.
girl4 will take it from here....

So we're on break:
and we've decided that since this debate is being held in a bar, it's only fitting that we create a presidential drinking game.

Solidarity: 1 sip.
Accessibility: 1 sip.

Social Debate
Solidarity! Inspiration! Philanthropy! Buzzwords!
Jean-Guillaume wants Weekend Nightlife on campus 1848
Chaput: speaker to 101 Week, was great, but event was poorly attended. Wants to have less going on for 101 Week so that all events are better attended. Priorities for events for better focus. Accessibility for underage students, not just movie nights (flamenco note: maybe more faculties need to hold 101 week like Arts--all events all ages)
How do dry social events fit into SFUO social calendar?
J-G: There are different ways to have fun. (But he wants to create a nghtlife on campus, maybe he sees both sides of the coin, or maybe subconsciously wants to decrease the amount of annonomus hookups on campus)
Chaput: Dry events are the greatest events, look at winter games, GDT, is great for socializing.
VCS-H: Accessibilité (Whoa, outta left field): How can we make the campus even more accessible to students?
J-G: Closed captioning sur les écrans. (note: Communications, not Social), les lieux plus accessibles pour la semaine 101
Chaput: VP Social doit travailler avec CSD pour s'assurer que ça peut être accessible. Bien planifier. Plus de BBQ, plus de lignes.
Since 1o1 week is going to start really early this year, and class is starting on Wednesday, how will you make enough time,a nd which events will you cut?
Chaput: C'est vrai qu'il y a moins de jours pour le move in. Travailler avec rez pour organizer. Masser si c'est possible de modifier les jours.
J-G: Adapter l'horaire. Garder Opening et Closing Events, bref.
More socially conscious events? How are you coging to incorporate Black History Month?
J-G: Not only to BHM, throughout the year, more events that are conscious. People want to learn!
Chaput: To get a better turn out, advertise long before elections. Posters take over. Talking about promo (COMMUNICATIONS NOT SOCIAL!)
...fingers need a rest...
Philanthropic events... how do you feel about raising money by using sucker runs SUBJUGATION OF WOMENS!
J-G: Keep it local, bring it abroad (what is "it"?)
Chaput: not fair to ask people to dress up and have sucker runs. Improve upon respect for this event. Communicate to round tables and
closing statements
J-G: Créer de la changement.
Chaput: Bring back Winter Challenge to Winter Games. A great steppign stine this year. Increase participation for all events. By volunteering it builds leadership. Bigger events add more to our community.

Social Debate - Witty Commentary
Overall impression, Alex keeps dwelling on things he's done (a lot of good things) instead of what he will do. Jean doesn't really seem to know what he's talking about and keeps throwing in buzzwords that don't really mean anything.
I like the idea of increasing participation by organizing less events and focusing on promoting them and making them bigger.
Alex talks about working WITH volunteers to build ties and relationships across campus.
MOST BORING SOCIAL DEBATE EVAR. You want to be VP Social. The life of the party.
One thing I'm noticing across all of these debates is that all of the candidates seem bored. Campaigning rule #1 - It doesn't matter how boring what you're talking about is, you need to make it seem like it's super interesting. Be smiley. People don't want to vote for a debbie-downer.

Student Affairs!
Michèle looks very lonely up there...
10:56 - Opening statement. Goes over her experience. There's a lot of it. Main initiatives: Café Alt, Prez for UESA, VP Comm Franco for Arts. Services: give them the tools they need to reach out to students! Student spaces: we have so LITTLE space on campus for students (this became evident during the bus strike). RGN: These students pay for services, they need to be accessible to RGN-ites. MUCH LUFF FOR uOttawa!.
10:59 - First Question. How do plan to increase the visibility of the SFUO's services?
Use more interactive means to promote services. Do class presentations. Move away from just using posters to promote.
How will you be a ressource for the SFUO's clubs?
Wants to find more ressources for the services. Her experience working with Member Associations for SAFA can be applied.
Do you think enough stuents use the services?
No! But it's a shame, they are great. Didn't know a lot of them existed until halfway through her first year. But they are important - students need to be informed about what exactly the services do!
Questions from the Floor
What experience do you have working with the services?
Never directly worked with the services, but has friends working with them. Has good experience and resources that she can bring to the services.
You said you wanted to more English representation...do you value the francophone community??
Question is out of context! It has nothing to do with the admin having an 'accent'. Comes from the English department, a lot of comments from students about the difficulties anglophone students have working with staff at the faculty level.
SFUO is perceived to be mainly ANGLOPHONE. What will you do to make sure Franchophones feel comfortable using the services?
Billingualism centre is a step in the right direction. Would like to see an equality in the languages, not one language above the other.
You had a visible role in the CFS referendum. What will your role be with the CFS?
Continue to work possitively to address problems students have with the CFS. They do have a lot of knowledge and ressources. Is open to working with them, and won't fight them. I won't dwell on this!
How do you plan to keep the integrity and individuality of the services?
Interview process when hiring, making sure applicants know what they are applying for.
Clubs. How are you going to distribute resources and finances? (For example, offices)
Rewarding clubs that work hardest on campus with more resources, however everyone has access to the clubs and resources. Explore structures at other communities to see how we can improve.
CLOSING STATEMENT! 90 SECONDS. GO!!
Create more student spaces. Let students know about services. Wants to do a lot, but feels she will work hard to do as much as possible. Website plug! michelelarmarche.com

BOA Voice Special Edition!
Dear gentle readers,
The lure of free crepes, pizza, and the possibility of an iPod touch have convinced me to come out bright and early and liveblog the debates for the SFUO's elections! Should be interesting.
1848 is quite full. It's nice to see so many students out and getting interested in these elections. A nod to Wassim, Sylvia, and the Elections committee for generating interest! Go team!
There are laptops and macbooks everywhere. Everyone is blogging. THE BATTLE FOR THE IPOD TOUCH BEGINS.
10:22 - Debates begin. Candidates for Finance are going first!
10:25 - Opening statements. Roxanne goes first. Cool and calm. She talks about Café Alt as a new business on campus, and the fact that there is still a lot of work to be done. She wants to organize bartending workshops for students (uhm, awesome!) and
10:29 - Maureen swoops in. Keywords - experience, determination. organization. Three word slogans seem to be a theme this year. Wants a full kitchen for 1848, get an updated budget online (good initiative!), and to create scholarships and bursaries through the fed. saweeet.
10:30 - Campus Print - what do you see in the future?. Working on the interface. It's online right now...
Maureen rebuff - We need to be more competitive - compete with Merriam Print (they are pretty awesome....and fast). More visibility is needed through the SFUO website
Should the SFUO budget for a surplus? How will you reinvest?
Maureen - Reinvesting by creating scholarships. Has 20, 000$ in debt, so she understands! It's student money first, they need to know where they are going,
Rox - We need to be careful...we budgeted for 100,000$ surplus but this is used for other activities and events. Talks about the economic crisis.
1848 - What will you do to improve 1848?
Rox - 1848 is breaking even this year (applause from the audience!!) Programming needs to be inclusive. She keeps talking about a Salsa night. I'm not sure how much of a draw this would be...Sure, a kitchen would be nice, but it would be costly and there's no space for it.
Maureen - Space outside was originally to be used for a kitchen...it's office space right now. Student associations should be using
Does the Fed pay it's employees well enough??? (lawlz)
Maureen - We need to up their salaries. We need to look at all of our possibilities with HR, and how it will effect the budget.
Rude comments from the peanut gallery, so I didn't hear Roxanne's response. Shame!
Open questions...
Aminka - (To Maureen) Being only in 2nd year, do you have enough experience?
Maureen - Doesn't don't think it matters. Has experience. She can bring a Fresh Perspective to the SFUO.
Roxanne - Finance needs competence (interesting...). Believes she now knows the SFUO enough to make the changes she wasn't able to make this year.
Wassim - if you were a fruit, what would you be?
Roxanne asks for the audience's opinion. She will be an avocado. (Because you're mushy and go well with garlic???) Swings back with this line "Because I'm hard on the outside, and soft on the inside". I bet you googled that line.
Maureen - Tomato, since it may be the most contested fruit out there. Nice!
10:45 - Closing Statements
Maureen - Members of the SFUO need to Choose Change. We need to represent students. A vote for Maureen is a vote for someone who wants to work with students, and for students.
Rox - Finance is suparr important!!! Want to build a strong student life.
Cheers and applause from the audience. And the first debate is done!!!
